Nonsense and other sillyness...
They really did it!
Published on February 1, 2006 By John Hamp In Galactic Civilizations II
I can't believe how well this game has turned out. Back during the betas the game seeed a little buggy and a little bit dry to me. I was a tidy bit worried. It had the makings of a great game but could they get the bugs out and make it really have a soul?

I can't speak for the other gamma testers. BUT I think Stardock could probably have gone gold last week if they had to. They could definitely have gone gold by the beginning of this week. At this stage, they're fixing bugs that are pretty minor, the kind of thing you'd normally wait until the second patch of another game.

The gamma has the campaign in it and I won't give away the ending but WOW. No campaign in a game I've played has had such a shocking ending. It took my by surprise.

The gamma also has the tutorials in it. They're in-game videos that explain how the game is played. it really adds a nice touch.

I don't remember the beta very well but I think the biggest difference is the level of fit and finish that's on the game. The animated intro, the upgrade notification on the planet screen, the cleaned up icons.

So it is perfect? No. There are a few cosmetic things I wish were different. Nothing that affects the game play. I was up very late last night playing and playing. It is definitely the best strategy game I've ever played by far. I don't say that lightly.

As much as I liked the first Galactic Civilizations, it was very definitely a game made by a small developer. When I saw something in the first game that was kind of ugly or odd, I would say "Well it's a great game given how little budget they had."

GalCiv 2 isn't like that. GalCiv 2 has what it takes to be on par with a Civ 4 or Star Wars empires at war or any other big name game. I predict that even though Civ 4 is a great game that many people will say that GalCiv 2 is a better strategy game and has better production values in many areas.

Im a strategy gamer so i'm just glad that I've got Civ4 and GalCiv 2. These are the salad days for strategy gamers.

Thank you stardock for putting in the time and energy to make something special. This game is going to make a big impression outside the strategy arena. I think its going to put Stardock on the map as a big name game developer.

Thanks for the praise.

nice report. Well done John, and well done the guys and galls at Stardock - I beta tested GC1 extensively and I agree this is a major cut above, great progress and if quality does get its rewards (it doesn't always) GC2 should establish Stardock, but particulary Brad and his merry band as top flight games developers ( they are top flight im many other respects of GUI development etc of course).

I look forward to the team getting its rewards and turning its attention back to Society

Sounds very good! I was already impressed by the last Beta version available to me, but I understand more and more that I only saw the bare brickwork. I don't play that many games, bought only two or three last year I think, but the ones I buy I tend to play a lot all the way down to the bottom. And it's been long since I could hardly wait for a game that much like I do at the moment.

Thanks for taking the time to write down your impressions and to give out some bits of information.

Urm, great report and all but..... did you HAVE to give away the fact that there's a surprise at the end of the campaign.

Where's the surprise in knowing that there's a surprise?

Mmm. The difference between gamma and the betas is fantastic. A hell of a lot has been fixed and polished since those dark days back in Decemeber '05. In fact if it weren't for the frequent screenshot updates or journal entries I would say a fair few people would have trouble recognising some parts of the game when they get their shiney release version. The interface is the same, but she sure as hell is a different beast now.

Biggest shock I was adjusting to the AI. It's sneaky. It's devious. On the harder levels it kicks my arse, the biatch! It's not safe out there in the night sky...

The best fix for me is ship upgrading - I just luuuurve designing ships. Now that it works properly you can make a nice looking ship without engines or weapons etc and save it. When you upgrade the design and save the newly fitted out ship (under a new name), the old unfitted design remains untouched in the starport list. This allows you to spawn multiple variations and incremental tech upgrades from the same cool looking ship design.

There are many cool gameplay moments to be had in this new and virulent GCII, but my favourites are creating a fleet of beastial ships and sending them into combat against an enemy fleet. Watching my jewelled creations spitting death at near reletavistic speeds is... no... this will be read by children so I can't say it.

Everything about the game is better than it was in December.

Let's hope that the high production values will allow GalCiv2 to break out of the single player strategy niche and attract players that don't normally play these games. I would like it to revive this neglected sector!

Civ4 was voted by many, best strategy game of 2005. It is still early in 2006 but it looks like GalCiv2 could claim the title for 2006! Thank you Stardock for making a truly great game!

I haven't pre-ordered GalCiv II, but from the dev journals and the reviews at such websites like GameSpy, I am definitely going to be first in line at my local Wal-Mart when the game is finally released. I'm looking forward to creating a Terran Empire with the leader name as "Rick James". When my enemies ask who I am, I'll respond by saying "I'm Rick James, *****."

i own tons of games and id say that 80-90% are TBS or RTS yeah im a really big fan of these types of games (and if you can figure out i like the civilization series alot) but i think that i might ahve to change my name to galciv2fanatic when this game comes out cause if its as good as the gamma testers are saying it is itll be better than anything i have

feb21 is way too far off but at least i can download it before the cd comes in

amazing work theres no way this aint gonna get pc game of year and who knows maybe game of year?

btw can i change my name to civ4fanatic and later galciv2fanatic without losing my posting stats?

@Aulhel... you should still preorder it. What would Rick James be without some extra bling?
on Feb 02, 2006

Glad you like it!

I'm also very looking forward to this great game! And strategy game of the year is a very good possibility. But game of the year is probably a bit optimistic, as there are A LOT of FPS-Fanboys out there

It will probably be some stupid WW2 shooter that runs away with the honor...

WW2... So sick of WW2 games.

I won't be buying GC2 for the flashy (graphics) part, what drives me crazy in advance are these AI reports.
